Salsa Contest 2014 - Enter Now!

Bloomingfoods and Parks and Recreation are teaming up again to bring you the 26th annual Salsa Contest at the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market from 10am-12pm on Saturday, August 23rd. The contest begins at 10am with nine local judges tasting salsas in raw, cooked, and specialty categories, with winners announced around 11am. Gather at Showers Plaza just outside of City Hall to witness Master of Ceremonies Steve Krahnke of WTIU, Greg “Rags” Rago of Nick’s English Hut’s famous salsa-making demo, a salsa (the dance kind) performance from Arthur Murray dance studio, and partake in a free salsa tasting yourself! Whether you are preparing your favorite recipe(s) for the event ahead of time or sampling scrumptious salsas the day of, this event is fun for everyone! If you are interested in participating in the Salsa Contest, the instructions on how to do so are below. 

First, second, and third place winners in each category will be awarded prizes from BIRA, Bloom Magazine, Bloomingfoods, The Chile Woman, The Chocolate Moose, Friends of Art Bookshop, Goods for Cooks, JL Waters, the Local Growers Guild, Parks and Recreation, Revolution Bike and Bean, and Uptown Café, and more!


  • Pick up a salsa contest packet at Bloomingfoods East, Near West Side, or Elm Heights store. There is a $5, non-refundable entry fee for each packet.
  • Use the utmost care and cleanliness in preparing your salsa. Please do NOT prepare extremely hot salsa: it will be disqualified at the first sign of a burning tongue.
  • All salsa must be prepared on Friday, August 22nd and be delivered to either Bloomingfoods East or Near West Side by 8pm.
  • All eligible salsa must be entirely made-from-scratch. Whenever possible, use fresh, locally-grown, unblemished ingredients, with no artificial flavorings, preservatives, additives, or prepared hot sauces.
  • Raw and cooked salsas must be tomato-based or tomatillo-based.
  • Specialty salsa may contain either/both raw and cooked ingredients, including tomatoes and/or fruit, but it may NOT have a tomato base.
  • There is a limit of three entries per person, one in each category.
  • To win and receive your prizes, you or a representative must be present at the Farmers’ Market when winners are announced at approximately 11-11:15 on Saturday, August 23.
  • Judges and their family members are not eligible to participate.
  • All entries must be accompanied by the recipe used. Return the recipe form, the paper bag, and the salsa in the containers provided.
  • You must consent to having your recipe published in the Bloomingfoods e-news and/or on the Bloomingfoods website. Your recipe may also be selected for publication in the Herald-Times.

East Store Meat News

Customers at our East and Elm Heights locations may have noticed our selection of fresh "This Old Farm" products has been expanding lately. We started a few weeks ago with their 100% grass-fed ground beef, and now their certified organic, pasture-raised ground pork has hit the shelf. These exciting new developments can only mean one thing; that there is a delicious meatloaf in your future! If you don't have a family recipe of your own, check out this one, from Epicurious. It's a great way to try the grass-fed beef and organic pork all in one shot, and you'll even get to throw some bacon on top!

If that wasn't enough excitement already, the East Side meat department has a number of other new products up its sleeve (well, okay, they were never up our sleeve, but they are in our meat case!). We are now carrying grass-fed halal lamb. We have fresh ground lamb available for $6.49/lb, and frozen lamb soup bones for $2.49/lb.
