East Store Grocery News: October 2011

What a spectacular time of year!  The store looks great inside and out; we’re excited about the upcoming Truckload sale this week and have brought in some new items we’d like to share with you.

Maybe the most exciting are the new GT Dave’s  Chia Kombucha flavors!   The 16 oz. glass bottles of raspberry, grape and cherry Kombucha feature chewy chia seeds suspended in a handmade Chinese tea that’s rich in active enzymes, probiotics, amino acids and antioxidants.  They have become an instant hit with the B’foods staff!!

Maybe the second most exciting is the addition of Jared’s Farm Fresh Eggs to our local egg selection.  I’ve met Jared (pictured left) and his grandparents, who operate Green Pastures Farm right here in Bloomington.  Jared is nine years old and, last year, asked for chickens as his birthday present.  I asked Jared if he does all the work taking care of his animals and – I mean it – he stood up straighter, kind of puffed his chest and, with a smile, said, “Yeah all of it, with a little help.”  I’m looking forward to this relationship!

Maybe the third most exciting new product is actually a line of products from a company called Tea Forte.  We’ve set up their beautiful cabinet display in the tea aisle, across from the bulk coffee grinder.  Take a look!  Beautiful teas including tea for skin care; organics; iced; loose and bagged: green, white, roobios, herbal, black; tea ware; and functional tea mints!  The packaging is beautiful, too.  Here’s an interesting recipe from the Tea Forte website:

White Ginger Pear Poached Tilapia
2 cups boiling water
2 White Ginger Pear pyramid infusers
1 green onion , coarsely chopped
2-4 thin slices fresh ginger (about 2 inches each)
1 1/4 pounds fillets of tilapia or cod or flounder

In 2-cup glass measuring cup, pour water over White Ginger Pear pyramid infusers and brew 5 minutes. Remove infusers; set aside.

In a 12-inch skillet, bring tea, green onion and ginger to a boil over high heat. Add fillets. Reduce heat to low and simmer covered 6 minutes or until fish flakes with a fork. Remove fillets to serving platter and sprinkle, if desired, with chopped green onion.

PREP Time 10 minutes
Makes 4 servings

As always we welcome your feedback and ideas!

East Store Grocery News: September 2011

September 2011 East Grocery News:

Hi Folks!  Well, there’s been an appreciable uptick in activity around here since schools are back in session!  It feels great!

We’ve brought in some interesting new items for you to try:

Forbidden Flavors Ice Cream:  from Terre Haute, In.  Jill and Andrew Conner have created an amazing array of uniquely flavored ice creams, including:  Cardamom Custard, Red Raspberry Sorbet, Goat’s Milk Piloncillo and Curried Carrot.  Andrew came to the East store to sample his goods and they were extremely well received by customers and staff, alike!

Joan’s Caramels:  “Put a smile on your taste!” is Joan’s motto for her delicious, homemade caramels.  Joan makes her magic right here in Bloomington.  She, too, was here to sample her caramels and they were a big hit!  “Our made from scratch recipe allows you to enjoy handmade caramels with a soft, melt-in-your-mouth goodness.  Made in small batches with each caramel hand-wrapped and color coded with a ribbon according to flavor”… Original, Salted, Turtle, Peanut with Sea Salt, and Maple Pecan.

Earth Balance:  “Organic Coconut Spread is a rich, creamy way to stir fry and sautée vegetables. It’s delicious on toast, pancakes, waffles and bagels and it will add a whole new level of flavor to your baked goods.
You can use it in place of butter for any recipe! It adds a mild coconut-y vanilla flavor without overpowering a dish. And if you’re sautéing with it, its flavor will decrease as you increase the cooking heat. Keeping it at a low heat will intensify the coconut flavor.”
“And Earth Balance MindfulMayo™ Dressing and Sandwich Spread is here, for all of you conscious eaters out there who love a good sandwich, pasta or potato salad. You can use MindfulMayo™ in any recipe that requires regular mayonnaise!

MindfulMayo™ Dressing and Sandwich Spread comes in three varieties: Original, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Organic. It is also vegan and free of cholesterol and GMOs…”
Earth’s Best:  Fruit Yogurt Smoothies for your toddler…
Mrs. Meyers:  Rosemary scented dish soap, all purpose cleaner, countertop spray, laundry detergent and window spray.  The rosemary scent was intentionally designed for natural foods stores due to complaints about the overpowering nature of other Mrs. Meyers scents.

And…a few more regionally produced items from our friends at Tiny Footprint Distributors:
•    American Sweet Bean Edamame (Ohio grown),
•    Luna Burgers (artisan, organic, vegan burgers crafted in Columbus, Ohio),
•    Riehle’s Select Popcorn:  Riehle's Select Gourmet Popcorn is our family name and our company sits on the fertile Indiana farm land that has been in the Riehle family since 1910 (Sunman, Indiana). We chose the word Select because we feel we have selected the best eating and tasting popcorns available. Our popcorn is considered GOURMET POPCORN because we grow the popcorn for taste and great quality, not large quantity like some larger commercial popcorn companies. Our popcorn is also GMO free.

Udi’s Pizza Crust, Explore Asia Gluten Free Pastas, Natural Nectar Dark Chocolate Dream Cocoa Spread, VitaKitty Cat Treats, and more – all brought to you by customer suggestion!

Well, I think that’s about it from here.  Stop in and say "hi," and keep the suggestions coming.  Although we can’t bring in EVERYTHING requested, please know that we really do take all your input very seriously.

First, we'd like to announce that Matt Beall is our new Beer & Wine buyer, taking the helm from Amelia Williams, who has moved on.  I’m very excited about Matt’s expertise and enthusiasm.  He hit the ground runnin’ this week, has some great new ideas, and can’t wait to become acquainted with our beer and wine drinking customers!  Matt has been with Bloomingfoods for almost a year, so you’ll recognize him.  Stop by and say hello.

Trader’s Point cottage cheese is back!  Thanks for bugging us to bring it back…..

Bulk Adzuki beans are back and we’re stocked up on bulk pine nuts for your pesto making needs!  Also, be looking for our new BULK COOKING GUIDE!  It’ll be available soon.

We’ve also got some exciting new local products coming soon.  I’ll let you know more when we get them in!

East Store Grocery News: June 2011

One of our projects for this summer is to organize each grocery category, i.e., crackers, cereal, frozen entrees, etc. so that, within each category, there is a very distinct and clearly identifiable Gluten Free section.  Much of the “moving around” has already happened and now we’re simply waiting for the merchandising materials to arrive.  As always we welcome your feedback!

The East store is stocking some new items that I hope will interest some of you (many of these have been requested by customers.)

Refrigerated Items:
•    Organic Valley Orange Juice is back!!  After too many months of doing without, I’m happy to report that these favorite refrigerated juices are back on the shelves.  Here’s a simple recipe from the OV website.  Enjoy!

Zesty Ginger Mashed Sweet Potatoes
What a marvelous thing a sweet potato is—rich and meaty and full of fiber, beta carotene and vitamin C. Not to mention how radiant it looks on the plate!
3 pounds sweet potatoes
1 1⁄2 - 2 tablespoons grated gingerroot
1⁄3 cup Organic Valley Orange Juice, at room temperature
2-3 tablespoons Organic Valley Butter, cut into pieces and softened
Salt & pepper to taste
1. Place sweet potatoes in a cold oven; turn on oven to 350 degrees and bake until very tender, about 1 hour. (They can also be started in a hot oven.)
2. Cut hot sweet potatoes in half and scoop the flesh out into a bowl. Whip with remaining ingredients and serve immediately (or let cool and reheat in microwave oven before serving).

Jolly Llama Squeezeups:  From the website www.jollyllamasorbets.com:“Jolly Llama’s Sorbet Squeezups – our first line of delicious, healthier frozen treats - are made from actual fruit, not juices or concentrates. As a result they burst with the refreshing, real taste of sun-ripened fruit while retaining the rich store of nutrients nature intended…More than just make better frozen treats, though, we want to be a socially responsible company that gives back. Our biggest focus is on promoting healthier lifestyles through healthier diets.   This year we are launching a drive to support local non-profits that work to get kids eating healthier food. We envision a day where preventative health care, including diets with more whole foods and healthier processed foods, will save future generations from suffering the ill-affects of the epidemic rates of obesity and diabetes our children are experiencing now.”

Other new grocery items include:
Late July Tortilla Chips, Udi’s Gluten Free Hamburger buns, Hot Dog Buns and Chia Millet Bread, Ines Rosales  Cinnamon Sweet Olive Oil Tortas (sure to become one of your favorite snacks!),Rudi’s frozen Gluten Free Pizza Crust, Pamela’s Gluten Free Cookie Bites and Local Folks Foods Pizza Sauce!

One last thing….as a follow up to last month’s newsletter….  I bought a Sprouting Jar from our new Seed Sprouting Station and some broccoli sprouts.  It’s magic!  I was eating (and sharing with others) delicious, nutritious sprouts on everything within three short days.  You should try it!

Have a great June everybody!
