How Local Can You Go? Join the Eat Local Challenge : During the next two months, and specifically from July 15th-August 15th, Bloomingfoods Market and Deli will be participating in a community-wide Eat Local America Challenge. Conceived by the National Cooperative Growers Association (NCGA) to celebrate and support the growing interest in locally grown foods, Eat Local America encourages individuals and families to increase the amount of local food they consume. We are suggesting that participants try to use four out of five ingredients in their meals from food grown or produced locally.   

Lend a Hand, Buy a Foot to Build New Food Bank
: In order to keep pace with the growing demand for food assistance, the Hoosier Hills Food Bank is planning to move to a larger facility this year. "Put simply, we need more space to distribute more food to more people," explains HHFB Executive Director Julio Alonso. The effort to build a larger food bank distribution center can use our help. Hoosier Hills Food Bank has launched a "Lend a Hand, Buy a Foot" campaign to help secure a new space to get more food to more people.

Supporting Farmers through the Local Growers Guild : You've probably noticed the logo for the Local Growers Guild in Bloomingfoods, where we sell t-shirts and tote bags emblazoned with its golden sun and rolling landscape. But what is the purpose of this networking organization? "The Local Growers Guild exists to educate, support and connect local growers, consumers, businesses and communities in Southern Indiana," explains Director Maggie Sullivan, quoting the mission of the LGG.

The Tao of Cooking, the Way of Cooks : Author Anne Clemmer shares a recipe from her neighbor, who remembers The Tao restaurant – a beloved Bloomington institution celebrated in a new reprint of a classic cookbook.

BloomingArts Series: Coming Home to Roost, Daniel Orr : "My parents rang a cowbell when it was time for dinner." I met Daniel Orr at the 2007 Winter Farmer's Market, where we set up an interview for my radio show on WGCL. Daniel has his own line of ten kitchen spice blends, Kitchen D'Orr, so our topic was spices – their historical and medicinal value, and ways to use them in the modern kitchen. On the show he gave a recipe for making rosemary massage oil, and I was hooked!
