Green Acres Neighborhood Garden (GANG): Planting the Fall Garden
Fall crops are planted in summer. This workshop will focus on caring for the garden in the hot summer and on planting food to be harvested once it’s cool. Learn how to handle weeds, insects, and drying sun with mulch, shade cloth, row cover and other techniques. Learn to keep summer gardens vibrant and give fall crops a running start. Snacks and beverages provided.

Food Preservation
Drying, Canning, Freezing, Salting and Lacto-FermentationLearn about the many ways to preserve food this harvest season.
Stephanie Solomon of Mother Hubbard's Cupboard will cover canning, fruit preserving, drying, and freezing, as well as traditional salting and lacto-fermentation. The class includes a hands-on food preservation demonstration and tasting.

Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard Farm Tour: Susan Welsand, The Chile Woman’s Farm
Visit Susan Welsand (The Chile Woman) at her Monroe County home, to enjoy a tour of one of the "hottest" farms around. The Chile Woman supplies our local Farmers Market with an incredible array of peppers, which she also ships to growers all over the world.  We’ll visit at the perfect time to see all shapes and sizes of peppers, and to learn about the hundreds of kinds of chiles cultivated right here in Bloomington. Meet the Jacob sheep, and the llama who guards the chickens.

Our 7th annual Canning and Jamming workshop! Learn to preserve a myriad of fresh vegetables and fruits, and can your own tomatoes on site with a hands on demonstration. Grow Organic Educator Series
Learn from a team of organic gardening experts and share your knowledge with the community in this organic horticultural certification outreach program, which covers soil science to seed saving and everything in between. Complete the course and volunteer hours in a number of community projects to be certified as a Grow Organic Educator or just take the course for your own enrichment. Optional Saturday workshops and field trips are scheduled.

The Art of the Garden

From Paris and Versailles to the Amish of Indiana, Jami Scholl, certified permaculture designer, takes participants on a slideshow tour of the beauty of edible plants in the landscape. Covering basic design principles and their application to individual home landscapes, the class teaches “painting with plants” in order to provide a pleasing landscape that is also a source of healthy food.

Energy-Saving Bulbs (and Rhizomes and Tubers and Corms)
Fall is a great time to plant, divide, or take up for winter storage the specialized underground storage organs from which many of the most popular flowers grow, including the tulip, dahlia, gladiolus, and iris. Advanced Master Gardener H. Michael Simmons shows you how plants grown from rhizomes, tubers, corms, and bulbs save energy for themselves and for gardeners. Participants will learn secrets for success with growing, propagating, and protecting these beautiful and versatile plants.

Garden Ecology: Water
Water plays many roles in the garden, the understanding of which is essential to successful gardening. H. Michael Simmons, Advanced Master Gardener, introduces students to the functions of water in the garden and how to facilitate those functions. Topics covered include how plants use water, rainwater catchment, water quality control, irrigation techniques, water in the soil, drainage, erosion control, water conservation techniques, and the uses of water for disease, insect pest, and frost control.

An Introduction to Freezer Meals: Dinner Made Easy
with Lisa Ross and Nikki Wolf
If you’re tired of hearing “What’s for dinner?”, here’s an easy answer. In one night, learn how to make quickly prepared meals and keep them in the freezer to heat and eat. Participants prepare a variety of meals for freezing, including Shanghai Stir-Fry, Italian Baked Pork Chops, Chicken Enchilada Casserole, Bacon-Wrapped Cream Cheese Chicken, and Cornbread Casserole. Learn the basics of freezer meal preparation and storage, as well as how to cut your grocery bills by shopping smarter.

Garden Field Day
In this hands-on class, learn gardening skills for next spring from Advanced Master Gardener H. Michael Simmons. Here’s your chance to learn gardening techniques in the garden, including proper tool use, double digging, creating raised rows, making paths, taking a soil test, and preparing seed beds. Play in the dirt and learn gardening the way it was meant to be learned. Wear work clothes and closed-toe shoes and bring gloves, if you have them.

Landscaping with Flowering Shrubs
Flowering shrubs enhance the home landscape and provide interest through all four seasons. Since long-lasting shrubs serve as major structural elements in any landscape design; they deserve proper care from planting through pruning. Learn from Ian Paton, flowering shrub nursery owner and City of Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market vendor, when and where to plant appropriate shrubs and how and when to prune them. Large color photographs of 62 flowering shrubs will help students with selection of appropriate shrubs.

Neighborhood Greening Toolkit
Participants receive the tools they need to create and implement neighborhood greening projects, including such skills as asset mapping, community organizing, leadership development, meeting facilitation and group decision making, coalition building, and strategic planning.
