 Bloomingfoods is a warm and comforting place to shop for special occasions, no matter the time of year. Now, as leaves drift to the ground and the weather grows brisk, it’s time to prepare for Thanksgiving, pre-ordering your turkey or other main course, specialty dishes and pies. Enjoy the new items we bring into our aisles at this time of year, too – the better to help you savor the season.
We have an excellent selection of wine and beer to pair with your meals. Everything you need for baking is available in both pre-packaged and bulk form – from gluten-free flour to organic herbs and spices. We have apple cider from Musgrave Orchard, delicious local apples and winter squash, as well as chestnuts, pomegranates, cranberries, pears, sweet potatoes, and fresh and dried mushrooms. Organic dairy products and cheeses help round out your meal, as do vegan items for those who prefer to eat dairy-free.
You can pre-order your turkey or other main dish now, through Tuesday, November 15th, and it will be available for pick-up beginning at 8am on Sunday morning, November 22nd, at the location where your order was placed (unless stated otherwise). We’ll have extras on hand, too (first-come-first-served). When you pre-order, you receive your item marked with your name, sized as closely as possible to your specifications. Sizing information is available in the pre-order binders at the Kirkwood, East, and Near West Side stores, where we are happy to answer your questions. Just ask any staff person for assistance!
Ordering pies or sides? The Bloomingfoods delis at the East and Near West Side locations have special pick-up instructions in their sections of the pre-order binders.

Heritage Breed Bronze Turkeys

The day old poults (baby turkeys) arrive in July, spending the summer and fall months foraging on the lush pastures at Schacht Farm after a short stay in the brooder (poultry nursery). They are provided with shelter from the sun, wind and rain. The turkeys receive around 70% of their diet from forage, making for a more healthy bird both to raise and to eat. The remainder of their diet comes from local grains with organic supplements.

This is a customer favorite: fresh natural turkeys from Bowman & Landes, raised in the same way they have been since 1948 – with no growth hormones, antibiotics, or stimulants. The birds are free-range with access to the outdoors, living on a diet of high quality grains grown on the Bowman Landes Farm in New Carlisle, Ohio. Processed on site, they are individually inspected to insure a healthy, wholesome product, then packaged without the use of any nitrates, MSG, additives, colors, or flavorings. The ducks at Gunthorp Farms spend about three weeks under heat before they are turned loose on the pastures. There, they receive the same feed as the chickens – forage, with a mixture of corn, soybeans, and Hubbard’s Homestead mineral mix. These ducks are older at slaughter than most available. This, and the fact that they are raised on pasture makes them more like duck available in Europe.
