“Each One, Feed One” Food Drive: Supporting the Food Needs of Our Community

There are many triggers for financial crisis: the unexpected loss of a job, the sudden illness of a loved one, a home or vehicle in need of serious repair… Every day, experiences like these cause financial emergencies for members of our community, leading to uncertainty and fear. Too often, obtaining basic needs, like food and hygiene products, becomes a struggle.
Monroe County United Ministries (MCUM), a secular nonprofit organization serving the community since 1939, offers basic needs assistance to families experiencing financial crisis. Assistance takes many forms—food, clothing, hygiene items, cleaning supplies, bus tickets, and rent, mortgage, and utility assistance—to help stabilize families during challenging times. In 2012, MCUM distributed enough food to make more than 37,500 meals and dispensed more than 10,000 cleaning and hygiene products.
Offering assistance at this volume requires an active and generous community, like the caring residents of Monroe County, willing to reach out to neighbors in need of a helping hand.
This month, you can be instrumental in stabilizing families and filling empty stomachs through the eighth annual “Each One, Feed One” Community Food Drive. Held on August 23, 24, and 25, 2013, this event calls on generous community members to help stock MCUM’s food pantry after the summer season, traditionally a time when donations drop off significantly. MCUM volunteers will collect donations at area grocery stores, including Bloomingfoods, throughout the weekend to re-stock the food pantry.
The goal is to collect 16,000 pounds of food, cleaning supplies, and hygiene items from caring shoppers so that our neighbors in crisis may maintain the health and vitality of their families throughout the year. Financial donations are also welcome (and encouraged!).
