Community Orchard Update

ImageWe're pleased to offer this report from Amy Jo Countryman on the first annual meeting of the Bloomington Community Orchard.

--------------------------------------

Dear Fellow Fruit Lovers,

As you may have heard, you rock the Orchard world!  We have all officially won an orchard from the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation and Edy's Fruit Bars thanks to all of your persistence and enthusiasm.  Thank you.

We are incrementally getting closer to that fateful day when we...plant publicly-owned fruit trees!  Here are the most recent developments.

1. We installed nine terrific folks on the Orchard Board of Directors last night:
Jack Brubaker
Amy Countryman, Treasurer
Burhan Elturan
Ross Gay, Co-facilitator
Amy Roche, Co-facilitator
Jami Scholl
Amanda Wanlass, Secretary
Erin Wright
Shaun Ziegler

It is an honor to be a part of this inspired and inspiring team who is excited to bring the Orchard to fruition as thoughtfully and quickly as possible.  A great diversity of skills and experiences are present on the Board that will serve the Orchard well.

The next Board of Directors meeting will be held Monday, May 17 at the Orchard site at 7:30 pm; please feel free to attend!

2. The Operations Team will have its next meeting next Tuesday, May 11 at 6:30 pm at the Building and Trades park near Bloomington Hospital.  All are welcome- this will be a lively and productive meeting geared toward strategizing our next action steps.

3. Register by May 10th for the People's University low-cost class on orcharding.  This course, to be held on May 15, is designed to teach the care of fruit trees in the Community Orchard, but it is open to anyone interested in the organic management of fruit trees.  Please check out http://bloomington.in.gov/home-and-garden for more information and to learn how to register.

Thank you for your dynamic support thus far.  We'll keep you posted as to how to help when we have the details finangled and are ready to build the fence, lay the paths, sow the cover crops, make the compost, and plant the trees!

All the best,

Amy Countryman
