Stranger's Hill Farm Hoop HouseTaste a slice of agrarian life on the Summer Homegrown Indiana Farm Tour. Visit three special Monroe County farms: Stranger’s Hill Organics (site of the Hoosier Hills Food Bank Garden), Phoenix Farm, and Marble Hill Farm. Meet the local producers, and enjoy a delicious evening meal at Marble Hill Farm, prepared by Gregg “Rags” Rago of Nick’s English Hut and Jeff Finch of Finch’s Brasserie.
 
Learn about the organic production of fruits, vegetables, and plant starts at Stranger’s Hill Organic Farm, the oldest continually Certified Organic farm in Indiana (since 1989). In addition to their own operation, owners Dale and Lee Jones (with partners Rick Dietz, George Huntington, Heather Reynolds and Dave Rollo) have donated a half-acre to help create the Hoosier Hills Food Bank Garden. There, volunteers plant, tend, and harvest much-needed organic vegetables for the Hoosier Hills Food Bank and the many agencies it serves. Stranger’s Hill Organics products can be found at Bloomingfoods, the Bloomington Community Farmers Market, and the Tuesday Market.
 
At Phoenix Farm in Western Monroe County, Chris and Feng Valliant grow their own soybeans, Asian vegetables and other greens, selling them at the co-op, the Farmers Market, and to local restaurants. After a trip to China, where they learned the art of tofu-making from a third-generation tofu master (with the help of Feng’s father), they began to produce small batches of highly filtered artisan tofu with a smooth, rich, traditional texture.
 
Marble Hill Farm is located in southwest Monroe County. Owners Kip and Whitney Schlegel raise Angus beef on 150 acres, where their herd of cows and calves roam freely on lush green pastures. The farm’s state certified and inspected beef is free of hormones and antibiotics. Marble Hill Farm is also home to Nubian and Alpine goats, as well as a mixed breed of brown egg laying chickens. Marble Hill Farm products (including Angus beef, eggs, and seasonal produce) are available at the Bloomington Community Farmers Market, and by request from the farm.
 
This tour travels by school bus from Showers Common at 401 North Morton Street. (Please note that the bus is not air-conditioned.) Participants are encouraged to bring a hat, sunscreen, a snack, and water. Dress comfortably, with walking shoes: there will be some robust walks on uneven terrain. The tour will take place rain or shine. The schedule may be altered in the event of severe weather.
 
Check-in begins at 1:15, and buses depart at 2pm.
The cost, which includes an evening meal at Marble Hill Farm, is $60 per person.
