Middle Way Food Works Market Begins to Supply Bloomingfoods with Fresh Bread

Food Works, a program of Middle Way House, is best known around town for special events catering. This month, Food Works celebrates the opening of the new Food Works Market at 318 South Washington Street, in the historic Coca-Cola building.

Recognizing the importance of financial independence to women’s safety, Food Works offers employment opportunities, skills training and support to women who have sought the services of Middle Way House, a national model domestic violence shelter and rape crisis center.

From their large commissary kitchen, Food Works offers foods to-go and an ever-expanding lunch menu. Products include richly flavored, made-from-scratch soups and savory, half-moon hand pies with meat or vegetarian fillings. Full family style entrées-to-go are also available by special order. These include lasagna, gluten-free polenta lasagna, pot pies, shepherd’s pie and roasted vegetable strata.

Bloomingfoods is pleased to now offer Food Works’ delicious, gluten-free, olive oil bread. Food Works breads can be picked-up freshly baked from the Food Works Market on Wednesdays, or at all three Bloomingfoods locations. You’ll find Food Works’ savory spiced crackers at the co-op, too, as well as their whole wheat sandwich bread.

“I really look forward to people in the community stopping by our Market,” says Donna Storm, business and operations manager of Food Works. “We have wonderful soups, sandwiches and baked goods. Best of all, the women working in our kitchen are really looking forward to seeing our bread and other products showing up on the shelves at Bloomingfoods. It makes the potential for our growth seem more real.”

“The Food Works whole wheat sandwich loaf is a product we have been baking for Project School for a while,” says Storm. “It is a soft whole wheat sandwich bread that has passed the ‘kid test’. We will be selling rolls and buns, and we have some great gluten free breads, too.”

“It’s been a long time since we’ve retailed a fresh baked, everyday sandwich bread baked in Bloomington,” says Mac McLauchlin, Bloomingfoods grocery merchandiser. “I’m hoping that this great line of local products catches on.”

Food Works will host its grand opening on Wednesday, February 9th from 8am to 3pm. Stop in for breakfast or lunch, and order a box of Linzer heart cookies or chocolate truffles for Valentine’s Day. Special orders can be placed in the Market, or by calling 812-219-9525.
