Help Us Celebrate 35 Years at the Bloomingfoods Kirkwood Location

Come to the Bloomingfoods Kirkwood Birthday Party and introduce (or reacquaint) yourself to our original store! On Saturday, August 13, from noon-5pm, you’ll find grilled local food, including meat items, portabello mushrooms, salads, and a watermelon eating contest sponsored by Indy Fruit. We’ll have a songfest with birthday cake, and other music and fun throughout the afternoon. Beer and wine for those 21 and over. Come prepared to be carded (whatever your age) and raise a glass to the ever-improving, heart-of-town, community empowering Kirkwood store!

A great deal has happened in the busy 35 years since we opened at our first location, in a renovated limestone carriage house up the alley off Kirkwood, between Tracks and the Village Deli. Maybe you find your way in from 6th Street (where you can park in the Poplars garage), following the sunflowers up from Boxcar Books, alongside Runcible Spoon.

We think we may be the only multi-store food co-op to still operate in its first location. Quirky and unique (that alley, the flight of stairs), we’ve always recognized the charm of our original store, and it remains “original” in all of its transformations.

This past year you may have noticed many changes. The most dramatic has been the addition of the deli, run by innovative local foods cook Eric Swanson. We now offer made-to-order half and full fresh or grilled sandwiches, with side salads, pickles, and chips or fruit. We’ve added a salad bar, and have four fresh homemade soups available. Packaged grocery and frozen foods have moved downstairs, making room for a light and open eating and meeting space upstairs. All this makes for a hidden gem of a place, just a couple of blocks from campus on one side, City Square on the other.

Help us celebrate on August 13th, from noon to 5pm –  venture up the alley to a special birthday party just for the Kirkwood Store!
