Fall 2011 Truckload Sale

Martha with the Twins.Let’s suppose you are serious about cutting your food bill – and who wouldn’t be these days? The co-op can help in a dramatic way. Take advantage of our mid-October Truckload Sale, October 15 & 16, under the tents at Bloomingfoods East. The tent will be open on Saturday from 9am – 6pm. Sunday hours are 10am – 5pm. We have most products in large quantities, to encourage you to take an extra 10% discount when you purchase by the case. “It pays to come early,” says merchandising manager Mac McLaughlin, “as much as we try to gauge demand, when coveted items are gone, they’re gone.”

Twice a year we build an outdoor store, complete with items from all departments, including beer and wine. We bring in big trucks and big savings, partnering with our friends from Tree of Life. It’s a weekend  event that you won’t want to miss, and not only because of great deals. There’s something fun about snagging a bargain, loading your larder, and planning ahead for winter meals.

Our fall Truckload Sale takes place on October 15 and 16. As always, the tent will be open on Saturday from 9am – 6pm. Sunday hours are 10am – 5pm, with the store open during its usual hours. Stop in for breakfast before you head down into the tent, and check out other in-house bargains there as well.

We have most products in large quantities, to encourage you to take an extra 10% discount when you purchase by the case. “It pays to come early,” says merchandising manager Mac McLaughlin, “as much as we try to gauge demand, when coveted items are gone, they’re gone.” There will be plenty of staff people on hand to help you load your purchases into your vehicle, too. All items run though our regular register system, so you’ll receive credit as a member- owner for your purchases at the sale.

It used to be that our Truckload Sales featured mostly packaged grocery, and it’s true that you’ll find plenty of those items there – snack crackers, chips, salsa, breakfast cereals, olive oil, canned soup, tuna fish, pasta sauce, noodles, and more. We’ll have Seventh Generation toilet paper, and other eco-friendly household goods. Our wellness buyers use the sale to make dramatic reductions on bath, beauty, and health products – you’ll find soap, shampoo, and supplements as much as 50-70% off.

And then there is the local meat – really fine deals from our regional suppliers, for you to pop into the freezer for the cold months ahead. Soup bones, stew meat, ground beef, bacon and sausage: these are terrific deals. Other refrigerated items normally bear a higher price tag, too. Look for dairy products and cheese from Organic Valley farmer-owned cooperative, and frozen fruits, fish, entrées, and vegetables. Even the fresh produce department has gotten into the game. Jerome Gust, our produce buyer at the East store, will have an entire section of the tent, with pumpkins, winter squash, and other fruits and vegetables in abundance. Look for deals on plants from the Garden Center, too.

You can help Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard at the Truckload Sale with donations of either food or money. Representatives of this award-winning local food pantry will be on hand. Contribute one or more item from each case you buy to Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard Food Pantry, or write a check: each dollar you donate helps the Hub purchase ten pounds of food. Besides offering food items to those who can use a temporary helping hand, Mother Hubbard’s offers access to community resources and classes on nutrition, cooking, gardening, and food preservation. Check our Community Education listings each month to learn how you can participate in those.

Last but not least – beer and wine. During Saturday afternoon we’ll have a special Wine Tasting event on the patio of the East store, where you can sample some of the wines that will be on sale inside the store for one day only. You’ll find beer specials, too. You must be 21 or older to attend the tasting. Please come prepared to show identification, even if it seems preposterous – that’s the law in Indiana. No sale of alcohol is allowed on Sundays, so Saturday is the moment to take advantage of these particular Truckload Sale bargains. Whatever your pleasure, we hope to see you there!
