NOVEMBER 2012 GROCERY NEWS
We’ve brought in some great new items and want to highlight a few for you :
One Degree Veganic Breads: From the One Degree Organics website, “In an age when even Wal-Mart is stocking “organic” fare, it’s wise to consider what the word now really means. Does the label guarantee healthy food, grown responsibly by people with integrity? Without transparency, it’s hard to know. But we, like you, want to know the story of our food; and that’s why we insist that all our ingredients are not only organic, but also veganic.
Organic growers are not supposed to use chemical pesticides, herbicides or man-made fertilizers on crops. Yet an organic certification does allow farmers to use animal waste, including blood meal and bone meal, to fertilize fields…Every grower who helps make One Degree foods uses veganic growing methods only. But that commitment is just the first step for us. We know and frequently visit the small family farms that contribute to our products. We’ve learned their stories, walked their fields. We know first-hand their dedication to providing pure, healthy food. Our farmers are not mass-market operations, nor are they anonymous. Using the scannable QR barcode or alphanumeric identifier on each One Degree package, you can know exactly who they are, and how they cultivate your grain. They respect the land, respect you, and have earned our trust.”
We are carrying the One Degree breads in the bread aisle: Flax and Spelt, Sesame Sunflower, Lentil Grain and Whole Wheat. Give them a try and let us know what you think!
Noosa Yoghurt: Strawberry Rhubarb, Peach and Honey. We brought this line in because of a customer request and they are flying off the shelf! Produced in Colorado by Morning Fresh Dairy, this line of yoghurts is named for Noosa, Australia. Here’s a little quip from their website: “We Aussies are famous for embracing other cultures, then adding our own little twist to make them our own. (It’s not “stealing,” it’s “being inspired.” There’s a difference!)
That’s exactly what we did with our Noosa Finest Yoghurt. We took a page from the Greeks (Ta, Greeks!) with their famously rich yoghurt. Ours is made in small batches, set, and infused with honey to give it that delicious sweet-tart tang, and smooth, velvety texture that sets us apart from the throng. We add just the right amount of fruit purees, made from the best the seasonal market has to offer, and pack it in clear tubs so you can see for yourself the lusciousness of what you’re about to enjoy.”
Lemon and Mango Almonds! From Sunridge Farms these are yoghurt coated almonds that are simply delicious! Our staff is split right down the middle when it comes to which flavor is preferred. I vote for Lemon! Look for them in bins at the end of the Bulk Aisle.
Allergen Free Dark Chocolate Chips: Also in our bulk section, dairy and gluten-free Pamela’s Whenever Bars: Raisin Almond Oat, Cranberry Almond Oat, Blueberry Lemon and Chocolate Chip Coconut. They’re really good AND gluten free!
The Bakeman Brownies: We’re trying out these little single serve brownies made in Chicago. They are sold in the same box in which they are baked, they’re organic, non-gmo, vegan and free of all common allergens. They come in some fun flavors and we’re starting with: Espresso Rum, Raspberry, Amaretto, and Triple Dark Chocolate. We’d love to have your feedback!
“ TheBakeman.com gluten free vegan products have a true homemade taste and texture you can enjoy with the knowledge they have the same home-style ingredients you would use. Our products use only the best quality non-gmo ingredients and are free of chemicals or additives.”

PET FOOD NEWS
What makes high quality pet food? Like people, cats and dogs do best with whole, minimally processed foods that contain a minimum of additives & artificial ingredients. There is also an increasing concern about food allergies in dogs and cats, especially wheat & other grains. Cats do best on a heavily meat-based diet while dogs need a blend of meats and vegetables. Some pet owners are switching to a raw foods diet for their pets with the idea that it most closely resembles what animals would eat in the wild. Pet owners are concerned, also, about potential contaminants and are looking for pet food made from animals raised in the USA following USDA guidelines.
With these considerations in mind, we have added several new pet products at Bloomingfoods East. The first is a grain-free dog food made by Holistic Select with salmon, anchovy, & sardines. The second is a “Duck, Duck, Goose” raw food cat & dog treat made by Stella & Chewy’s. The treats are freeze-dried so they need no refrigeration while still offering the benefits of raw food. We are also introducing a variety of other pet treats, including two Hip & Joint treats for dogs from Nutrisource, an all lamb chewy treat from Nutrisource, a low-calorie soft jerky chicken treat from Evanger’s, and two types of breath-freshening dental chews from Halo. Please let us know what you think of these new options and if there are other products you would like to see in the store!
!Pet Food Fun Fact! With Mr. Buck’s Genuinely Good Pet Food Company’s donation of $1 for every bag of dog food sold, your purchases have contributed over $400 to our local animal shelter! Way to go!! For those unfamiliar with Mr. Buck’s, they are a local company producing excellent dry and canned food for both dogs and cats and we are pleased to offer their complete line here at the East store.
