Remembering Radu

Thank You to Radu’s Bloomingfoods Family
by Viorica Lupu

As many of you know, my beloved husband, Radu Lupu, passed away last July. Radu worked with the grocery team at Bloomingfoods East, and his death took us all by surprise. The days and weeks that followed went by in a rush of grief. During that time I found great support from Radu’s co-workers and the customers of Bloomingfoods - all of you were so kind to me. Father Peter Jon Gillquist held a service for Radu in July at All Saints Orthodox Church, attended by many people in Radus’s Bloomingfoods family. People laughed and cried and shared stories there, remembering him.

In our tradition, someone who passes away is remembered at 3 days, 9 days, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 1 years, and every year for the first 7 years after death. We will hold another gathering at All Saints Orthodox Church in Radu’s memory, on Saturday February 6. I want to extend an invitation to everyone to attend. At 4:30 there will be a short program about Radu's life, followed by vespers and a memorial service at 5 pm, with a reception at 6 pm. If you are able to come, please rsvp by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or stop by the customer service desk at Bloomingfoods East to sign the guest list there.

I want to give heartfelt thanks to so many people for their help and support in the months since Radu’s passing. . . .

East Side Grocery Happenings - Jan 2010

Happy New Year to you all!  Thank you for being such good friends during the holiday season!  You all make it so much fun to play “Grocery Store!” So.  A new beginning…here are some of the new items that have shown up on the East Side in the past couple of months:

Montebello Artisan Organic Pasta

Montebello is an Italian classic...a true artisan pasta that uses long forgotten Old World techniques to create distinctive flavor and texture. Durum wheat semolina is organically grown on small family farms in the rolling hills overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The semolina is then carefully ground and combined with pure mountain spring water to produce a fine dough, which is extruded through hand-made bronze dies to create a rough texture.

Instead of flash drying in ovens, the artisans of Montebello dry their prized pasta slowly in traditional drying rooms. These Old World practices produce a delicious hand crafted pasta with a unique porous texture that cooks evenly and holds sauces beautifully. Enjoy Montebello knowing that it is the finest pasta available. Buon Appetito!

Changes at the East Store

Watch for Continued Improvements to our East Store

We are always trying to improve your shopping experience at Bloomingfoods East, and there are even more big changes in store. Next up: new paint, more re-sets, new shelving, and new equipment. You’ll even feel the difference, with more space in those aisles. (Yes, it’s true, more room for shopping cart ballet!)

Our exterior will be getting attention too, with dramatic improvements to our patio and Garden Center at the front of the store. We look forward to more easily shoppable space for spring planting sets, soil ammendments, compost, and everything else you need for urban gardening and lawn care.

Please bear with us and give us a high five as we make your East co-op ever more appealing.

February Grocery Doin's at the East Side

Well, happy Valentine’s and all that!! Ok, let’s move on.Image

ImageKombucha Report
This month we have a couple of forms of kombucha on sale.  “What’s all this noise about kombucha, anyway??”  I’m glad you asked!  We sold over 11 THOUSAND bottles of GT’s kombucha drinks last year.
That’s a lot of good people drinking a lot of good stuff!  “But WHAT IS IT?  Here’s your answer, straight from the company’s website:  Kombucha is alternately known as a Chinese tea, a plant, or a mushroom. But it's not really any of these. It's a living culture of beneficial microorganisms, and in Kombucha's case, the whole is infinitely greater than the sum of its parts! Our Kombucha is delicately cultured - some liken it to fermentation - for 30 days. During this period, essential nutrients form like active enzymes, viable probiotics, amino acids, antioxidants and polyphenols. All of these combine to create an elixir that immediately works with the body to restore balance and vitality. Kombucha has been used for hundreds of years throughout the world as a daily health tonic. The culture resembles a light brown, tough, gelatinous disk—and because it's a living, growing entity, it can regenerate and create new cultures with every batch. In fact, GT's Kombucha and Synergy are made from Kombucha cultures that are descendants of the original culture GT grew to create his first bottles.

Early Spring in the East Store Grocery Dept.

ImageWell, we did it!!  We got through the winter and made it to March.

This spring will bring lots and lots of changes at the East side.  You’ve probably already noticed some of these:  the bulk water dispenser has moved to the opposite side of the store near the wine display and the deli, the inside walls are being painted green, ceiling tiles are being replaced and light fixtures retrofitted.

The week of March 15, we will be replacing all of the grocery shelves in the center of the store.  A crew will work on this overnight to minimize disruption.  BUT!  Disrupted we will be!  Virtually every grocery item will have a new home when we’re finished.  Please, please don’t hesitate to ask for assistance finding things as our inventory shifts from place to place.
