It's the holiday season and Bloomingfoods is doing it's very best to have the groceries you need for your seasonal celebrations. Martha keeps us updated on new items and news from the East Store, including some details on the recent supply issues with coffee beans.

New Item: Truvia

“Say hello to Truvia™, a zero-calorie natural sweetener made from the best part of the stevia plant. It's natural. It tastes great. You can even bake with it. If happiness had a flavor, this would be it.”


Here's a creative recipe from truvia.com:

Black & White Spiced Coffee

Add a little zing to your morning coffee. Vanilla, cinnamon and splash of heavy cream makes this a decadent way to kick off your


2 tablespoons heavy cream

large pinch ground cardamom

large pinch ground cinnamon

2 packets Truvia™ natural sweetener

3/4 cup strong hot coffee

1/8 teaspoon pure vanilla extract


Beat the cream in a medium bowl until the cream barely holds soft peaks and set aside.In a small bowl combine the Truvia natural sweetener with dardomom and cinnamon. Place half the Truvia mixture in the bottom of a mug. Pour the coffee and vanilla into the mug and stir to combine all ingredients. Spoon whipped creamover the drink. Sprinkle whipped cream with remaining Truvia.


New Item: Blue Sky Free



Blue Sky Free is a guilt free , 0 calorie, 100% natural soda with great Blue Sky taste! It is naturally sweetened with Truvia (see above!) We are now carrying Blue Sky Free Root Beer, Cola and Ginger Ale.




New Item: Yucatan® Organic Guacamole 



A Light and Flavorful Guacamole Made With Organic, Hass Avocados and Our Finest Organic Spices








Chicken Guacamole Quesadillas


This is a great recipe for parties! The zesty chicken and cooked peppers are a succulent delight when mixed with the Yucatan® Guacamole.


1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast, diced

1 (1.27 ounce) packet fajita seasoning

1 Tbsp. vegetable oil

2 green bell peppers, chopped

2 red bell peppers, chopped

1 onion, chopped

10 (10 inch) flour tortillas

1 (8 ounce) package shredded Cheddar cheese

1 (12 ounce) tub of Yucatan® Guacamole

1 Tbsp. bacon bits

1 (8 ounce) package shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1 (12 ounce) tub Yucatan® Salsa




Preheat the broiler. Grease a baking sheet.

Toss the chicken with the fajita seasoning, then spread onto the baking sheet. Place under the broiler and cook until the chicken pieces are no longer pink in the center, about 5 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the green bell peppers, red bell peppers, onion, and chicken. Cook and stir until the vegetables have softened, about 10 minutes.

Layer half of each tortilla with the chicken and vegetable mixture, then sprinkle with the Cheddar cheese, bacon bits, and Monterey Jack. On the other half of the tortillas spread a layer of Yucatan® Guacamole. Fold the tortillas in half and Place onto a baking sheet.

Bake quesadillas in the preheated oven until the cheeses have melted, 10 min


Price increase alert!

Many of you have been talking about the increase in the price of coffee (among other commodities.) Well, we’re starting to face this reality. Here’s a message from S.K. Quigley roaster/owner of Partridge & Quigley, one of our local vendors: “For the past 6 months, world weather conditions and the weakness of the American dollar has greatly affected the coffee market. This in turn will make for several difficult years to come in this industry. Due to a 20%-40% increase in the cost of green beans and in order for the continued viability of P&Q Coffee Roasting Company, it has become necessary to increase the prices of our premium coffees.”

Expect to see a price increase for Equal Exchange coffees, too.

Here’s another look at this industry wide issue from an October article in the Wall Street Journal:

Coffee futures broke through the $2-a-pound level for the first time in 13 years as concerns about weather exacerbated a scramble to secure supplies. A shortage of arabica beans, desired for their mild taste, has been evident in global markets for years, and futures are now catching up with the high prices that have prevailed at South and Central America's shipping ports.

Arabica coffee for December delivery hit a high of $2.0315 a pound on ICE Futures U.S. during intraday trading on Thursday. That is up 6.4 cents, or 3.3%, on the day, and the highest point since Sept. 18, 1997.

Prices have been climbing since June as heavy rains brought on by a string of Caribbean storms dampened optimistic output forecasts released earlier this year. The wet weather cut into yields and diminished the quality of the region's existing beans.

"It's a scarcity issue that continues to get worse," said Shawn Hackett, the president of Hackett Financial Advisors. "You can't just snap your fingers and turn production around."

Stockpiles certified as deliverable against the futures contract stood at slightly more than 1.8 million bags, each weighing 60 kilograms, this week. This is a decline of 44% compared with the same period last year.

We’ve got some new items on the shelves that I’d like to highlight. As always we appreciate your feedback.


We’re very excited to introduce you to this line of locally produced foods. Beverly and Andy McDowell are from Centerville and produce raw, fermented products. Bloomingfoods member and local attorney, Ira Zinman, is a true fan of Hidden Pond and so he brought them to our attention. February Wine & Beer News from the East Store

With February, along with lots of snow and ice, come more exciting changes and great deals in the east side Bloomingfoods beer and wine department! First of all, our Create-Your-Own Six-Pack program has been so successful we’ve decided to develop the program. In order to expand the selection and increase the quality of beers available we raised the price of the Create-Your-Own Six-Pack by one dollar, making the cost $10.99. This allows us to put all our beers on the shelf and allows our customers to create a truly high quality, gourmet six-pack.

Frozen New Items

Talenti: Try this new line of Gelatos et Sorbettos in our frozen ice cream section.  We think you’ll love the taste, as well as the ingredients!  For instance, the Double Dark Chocolate Gelato is made with semisweet Belgian Callebaut chocolate morsels and a splash of vermouth.

Garden Lites Vegetable Soufflés:  Check out these new “mini meals” in our frozen section.  We carry the Zucchini, Roasted Vegetable and Cauliflower Souffle’s.

Finally!  We’ve made space in the store for a brand new Seed Sprouting Station!  Customers have asked for this kind of dedicated space for a long time and now we’re pulling it all together.  Please stop in and check it out (near the frozen foods section at the back of the store.)  Here’s a list the seeds we’re starting with:
