Clay City Pottery

Anyone gardening in Indiana knows about the challenge of our clay soil. I remember digging in the mud with youngsters at a local creekbed before sifting and straining it to make sculptures and pottery. The kids tapped into the excitement of this messy, elemental substance: what could be more fun than gathering up squishy stuff and molding it into dinasours, baby birds, and bowls?

Clay City Pottery in Clay City Indiana is one of the few family potteries still making traditional stoneware.

Stranger's Hill Organics

If you shop at Bloomingfoods or the Bloomington Community Farmers' Market, searching for certified organic vegetables or bedding plants, you have probably purchased something beautiful and alive from Lee and Dale Jones of Stranger's Hill Farm.

Stranger's Hill Greenhouse and Farm is located on Louden Road, just under 12 miles away from Bloomingfoods East. Each year the farm supplies our store with a variety of organic bedding plants for transplanting to area yards and gardens. Lee and Dale also sell mixed vegetables (including tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, green beans, and winter squash), herbs (mostly basil), and small fruits. They offer tours of their farm by prior arrangement.

Capriole Cheese

ImageIn 1976 Judy Schad, her husband and their three children moved to a hilly farm near Greenville, Indiana to begin a life "in which the land, the animals, and the cheese manage us." They were in search of a sustainable lifestyle, on a piece of land suited to raising animals and planting gardens. In an uncanny twist, Judy discovered when she ran the farm title that it had belonged to her husband's great, great grandfather in the 1870s.

Jameson Coffee

When sharing stories about Thanksgiving, one of our staff mentioned that her husband had picked up Jameson Coffee for the holiday. You may have noticed the bright white bags of organic, certified fair trade coffee we offer by this local distributor.

"It was like the whole house filled with this delicious fresh coffee smell," she noted. "And the coffee was excellent!"

Based in Greencastle, IN, Jameson Coffee is a local distributor of fresh roasted beans.
