The Near West Side deli is now offering hot calzones Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. A whole calzone costs $6.99, and a half calzone costs $3.49. The price includes a dipping sauce and a side. Pepperoni (pepperoni, mozzarella cheese) and four-cheese (house-made herbed ricotta spread, cheddar cheese, parmesan cheese, and mozzarella cheese) are available daily, and the following additional options will alternate throughout the week:
Monday - Chicken, Red Onions, Smoked Gouda, and Mozzarella Cheese
Tuesday - Bacon, Spinach, Tomatoes, and Mozzarella Cheese
Wednesday - Ham, Cheddar Cheese, and Mozzarella Cheese
Thursday - Mushroom, Spinach, House-Made Herbed Ricotta Spread, and Mozzarella Cheese
Friday - Wild Card!
Dipping sauce choices are: house-made tomato sauce (the same sauce we use on our pizzas), house-made garlic butter, BBQ sauce, and ranch.

Mise en Place is a term thrown around a lot in professional kitchens. If a chef asks a cook if they have their mise en place, the chef wants to know if the cook's station is ready to cook for service. Mise en place literally means "to put in place." A French phrase defined by the Culinary Institute of America as "everything in place" (as in set up), it is used in American kitchens to refer to the ingredients a cook requires for the menu items he or she expects to prepare: cuts of meat or fish, relishes, sauces, par-cooked items, spices, freshly chopped vegetables, and other components.
Later this summer, beginning August 6th and continuing over a period of six weeks, we will introduce a Ready to Cook program in our prepared foods department. Featuring products from our meat and deli departments, the program will make your home mise en place easier, faster, and more convenient
Sandwich specials are one area we can be especially creative and highlight popular or exotic ingredients. Here are a few of our favorites, composed from the finest breads, meats,cheeses, vegetables, and special sauces.

The Uptown: one of our regulars gets this sandwich everyday, so we thought others might like it too, Natural roasted turkey, fresh ovaline mozzarella, sliced tomatoes drizzled with balsamic vinegar on a fresh baked baguette served grilled till melty.
Bloomingfoods Rueben: Our in-house corned beef on local Bakehouse rye, melted swiss cheese, sauerkraut, slathered with homemade thousand island dressing served warm !
Wild west side grilled cheese: white cheddar cheese, creamy provolone, tomato, red onion, just a few jalpenos with spicy chipotle mayo grilled to perfection on Bakehouse whole wheat.
East Store Deli Manager
Beginning Monday, May 16 there will be a change on Bloomingfoods hot bars each Monday: no meat. No meat!##!!@$@! Why, calmer minds might ask? Because we've decided to join Meatless Monday, a campaign launched by the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to encourage Americans to reduce their consumption of meat. The average American currently eats 45% more meat than is recommended by the USDA. By cutting our intake we can reduce our risk of cancer heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. In addition, we will reduce our carbon footprint and save precious resources such as fresh water and fossil fuels required in huge quantities to produce meat. Finally, we think it will encourage us to try some delicious new foods we might otherwise ignore.
The Meatless Monday concept, then, is a simple one. It invites us to start our week in conscious moderation, replacing on this one day the meat we would normally consume with grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes. We're delighted to support this program, and we invite our customers to join us: it's good for the planet and good for you.
Hardcore carnivores, you'll be relieved to know that our sandwich bars will not be participating in the program, so please avail yourselves of their services for your meat fix on Mondays.
The East store deli department is currently reviewing its baking recipes, and is giving particular scrutiny to the oils it uses.
For many years, canola has been our primary choice. As one resource explains: "One of the healthiest for your heart and most versatile cooking oil in use today, Canola oil is used widely by both home cooks and professional chefs alike. It's light, clear and has a mild taste, which makes it ideal for cooking, fondues, stir-frying, salads and marinades. And, yes, even baking!" However, we are aware that "Safflower oil is also one of the best healthy cooking oils for baking, as the gentle, understated taste of safflower oil lets your other ingredients shine through."
