Artist’s bio

Irina Shishova is a visual artist based in Bloomington, Indiana, originally from Moscow, Russia. Her artistic journey began in her youth with formal training in drawing and watercolor at an art school in Moscow. Since moving to the U.S. in 1998, she has continued to expand her creative practice through study with local artists and a deep personal exploration of materials and themes.

Working across multiple media—including oils, watercolors, acrylics, colored paper, and pencil—Irina’s work is inspired by the human figure, natural landscapes, and urban environments. A passionate traveler, hiker, and camper, she draws on experiences from across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, often capturing the essence of motion and the atmosphere of place in her art. Her curiosity and love of exploration continue to shape her visual storytelling.

Irina is an active member of the Bloomington Watercolor Society and the Watercolor Society of Indiana. She earned her MBA from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in 2012, bringing a thoughtful and community-driven approach to both her artistic and organizational efforts.

In 2020, she founded Viridian Moon Art Gallery, a community-focused space created to support and showcase local artists, art groups, and organizations. Through this initiative, she remains committed to fostering accessible and inclusive opportunities within the arts.

Irina also serves as the Youth Show Coordinator at the Art Alliance of Greater Bloomington (Pillar Arts), where she enjoys promoting young talent and supporting the growth of emerging artists through student exhibitions and art contests.

Artist’s Statement

Catching the Motion is a vibrant exhibition of paper collage works by Irina Shishova, drawn from three of her recent series: Dancing Shapes, Flying Leaves, and Seasons’ Faces. Across all three collections, the artist focuses on a single, unifying goal — capturing motion. Whether it’s the graceful energy of women dancing, the fluttering fall of leaves, or the ever-shifting essence of the seasons personified as feminine forms, motion becomes the subject and the medium. The works are dynamic, bold, and full of emotional momentum.
